Ranked #1 out of 18 University of Toronto teaching sites for General Medicine, it’s no wonder NYGH is such a popular destination for medicine residents. Our high patient volumes, diverse variety of clinics, and the mentorship of some of Toronto’s most inspiring physicians, gives residents a truly unique learning experience.
But perhaps the most valuable lesson that NYGH shares with the next generation of health professionals is this: patients and families come first in everything we do. Nowhere is this more evident than in NYGH’s 21-bed Critical Care Unit – one of the largest critical care units in a community hospital in the GTA. Our interprofessional team of physicians, nurses and therapists provide specialized care for our most critically ill patients, including those with life-threatening illness or injuries who require intensive, specialized attention. NYGH puts patients and their families at the centre of care, developing initiatives that empower family members to be involved in the care of their loved ones, and going the extra mile for patients – including one memorable wedding that took place in the unit, when the father of the bride was too ill to leave the hospital.
“At NYGH we take it to the next level,” explains Dr. Phil Shin, Chief of Internal Medicine. “We not only treat the illness, but we truly look at the patient and all of his or her needs, to provide a full spectrum of care.”
The intensity of the care provided in this unit requires a wide variety of equipment to both monitor patients and help treat their illnesses. Critical Care is highly dependent on community support, relying on donors to help purchase advanced equipment and technology upgrades that are not funded by the government.
This year, we need your help to raise $153,000 to replace three invasive ventilators for our Critical Care Unit. Used 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ventilators breathe for our patients when they are unable to do it on their own.
