A Night Shift in Emergency
On the evening of Tuesday, November 25, 2014, more than 150 friends of North York General Foundation joined us for our annual Chairman’s Circle Lecture – A Night Shift in Emergency.
Ron Baruch, Chair of the Foundation Board of Governors, Terry Pursell, President and CEO of North York General Foundation and Dr. Tim Rutledge, President and CEO of North York General Hospital, welcomed guests to a unique, behind the scenes look at the activities of the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency, one of the most visited emergency departments in Canada.
Held in the future home of the Steinberg Family Acute Care Unit on the 8th floor of the Steinberg Family Tower, guests experienced the drama, trauma, decisions, stress and teaching that takes place in Emergency every hour of every day. Moderated by Dr. Rick Penciner, Emergency Physician and Director of Medical Education, and Andrea Ennis, Clinical Team Manager of Emergency Services, guests were thrown into a series of interactive emergency medical scenarios. Working with a facilitator to quickly make the best care decision for each patient, guests experienced firsthand the intensity and fast-paced environment of Emergency Medicine. Guests then visited 10 emergency simulation stations to triage patients, participate in life-saving techniques, and use state-of-the-art equipment before witnessing our Emergency team bring a patient out of cardiac arrest during a simulated code blue medical emergency.
This evening uniquely showcased the Steinberg Family’s leadership and vision, including the redevelopment of the Charlotte & Lewis Steinberg Emergency and the soon-to-be Steinberg Family Acute Care Unit, both slated for completion in 2015/2016. With their transformational commitment of $12 million – the largest individual investment in a community hospital in Canadian history – Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg are truly making a world of difference to our patients and their families.
We were also proud to announce a significant advancement in the delivery of interventional radiology services at North York General, thanks to the visionary investment of Gulshan and Pyarali G. Nanji – two of North York General’s most committed supporters. Mr. and Mrs. Nanji have pledged the lead gift towards the creation of a second Interventional Radiology Suite that will double the amount of patients we can treat with IR services annually and further reduce our already low wait times. In recognition of their generosity, we are proud to present the Gulshan & Pyarali G. Nanji Academic Centre.
“North York General has been my family’s hospital for over four decades for everything from kidney stones to successful treatment for breast cancer. I have personally experienced the Emergency department on many occasions as a child, then as a father, and finally as a son. From birth to end-of-life, you are always treated as a patient at North York General…never as a disease or ailment – patients definitely come first here. It is a beacon of comfort, strength, and hope and one of which I am so proud. We must support it when we can and how we can.”
