North York General Hospital celebrated the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Gale and Graham Wright Prostate Centre on June 27th.
Opened in 2007, the Gale and Graham Wright Prostate Centre was the first rapid access cancer diagnostic program within a community hospital in Ontario. Founded through the leadership of Graham Wright and Roly Watt, Co-chairs of the fundraising committee, the Centre exists today because of the support of our donors.
The Centre has dramatically reduced wait times for patients through an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. It has become a model of success for others to follow, providing support and compassionate care for more than 5,000 prostate patients.
The Wright Prostate Centre operates in collaboration with the Odette Cancer Centre at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Dr. Stanley Flax, Medical Director of the Prostate Centre, and Dr. Andrew Loblaw, radiation oncologist at the Odette Centre, presented data to guests showing the progress made in decreasing wait times for diagnoses since the Prostate Centre opened. Previously, the standard wait time for patient referred by their family doctor to receive a prostate diagnosis was 16 weeks; today, our average is six weeks. This is among the shortest wait times in Ontario.
“Early detection of prostate cancer is critical for the best outcome, because it is a killer cancer – in fact, it is the second most common cause of cancer death in men,” says Dr. Roger Buckley, Chief of Urology at NYGH.
A past member of the Foundation Board of Governors, Graham Wright has made significant contributions to the North York General community through volunteer leadership and philanthropic investment. As lead donors to the Prostate Centre, the Wright family has had a profound and widespread impact on our ability to provide the most compassionate and state-of-the-art care to our patients.
“Our gift to North York General Hospital has been a very rewarding philanthropic experience. We’re humbled that our gift is helping so many patients receive the best care.”
